I think Australians should look to "Tomorrow, When the War Began" as the model to fight - I suggest tongue in cheek.
Why is anyone talking about full on confrontation? The numbers (of any major powers planes, tanks, ships, soldiers vs Australian) and complexity of logistics and warring over very long distances don't make senses at all.
Spot on Binoy. You avoid any appeal to our fears of; Nuclear meltdowns from subs in Cockburn Sound, the pitiful lack of strategic thought behind "Attack Nuclear subs" and, the eye-watering costs around the whole Stirling Naval base and Henderson CIF (Controlled Industrial Facility).
As a retired Nuclear Physician I am most afraid of Military radiation accidents, soaring personal radiation exposure limits (endorsed by RFK Jr and Trump of course) and my home town being a prime target in any Nuclear conflict. Fears like mine are all too easy to relegate to the "sissy snowflake bin" that war mongers love to feed, but the same fears can be mobilised to the voting public if only peaceful protests are allowed to continue However I'm also afraid of that anti-AUKUS demonstration being crushed by terrible laws from our political duopoly.
Thank you to Savage Minds, your articles are always educational and excellent. This one reminds a little of my latest substack article. I explain how the populations in Cippola's quadrants: Intelligent, Bandit, Helpless, and Stupid, can rapidly shift during escalating ecosystems collapse. This is what is happening with regards to defense especially. Military operations are always ecologically costly, and in global ecosystems collapse, any money spent on defense is wasted. Link to my article follows:
Good article. My view of demands for higher defence spending is that the Armed Services and Government should demonstrate that they are capable of effectively managing the billions they are already given. In the UK there is a long history of overspending and late delivery - currently, Ajax fighting vehicle has yet to enter active service, 10 years after the contracted date and is currently more that £2 billion over budget, at over £5.5 billion, with this projected to rise to £6.3 billion before the contract is completed.
And don’t get me started on the corruption in military procurement, the revolving door for politicians, military personnel and civil servant’s into consultancy and paid jobs directly in the defence industry, whilst being rewarded with seats in the House of Lords.
It is so funny but, unfortunately, tragic that numbskulls in defence ride the roost.
